She expressed her belief that if there were better filmmakers in the industry, she wouldn’t have to take on the role of director for her projects.

In a recent interview with IWMBuzz, Kangana Ranaut shared her frustration, stating, “I am disappointed in the directors around us. We don’t have directors. If we had good directors, I didn’t have to do it.” She emphasized the lack of directors she admires, particularly mentioning that the treatment of female characters in big films is often atrocious. Kangana lamented the absence of directors she wishes to collaborate with, saying, “There’s not a single director in the film industry that I want to work with.”
Kangana reflects on her career journey with directors
Reflecting on her earlier successes, Kangana noted that she found great success working with new directors during her career’s initial years. She mentioned films like Queen, Tanu Weds Manu, Gangster, and Fashion, which were directed by relatively new talents. She has never been part of a film from major production houses like Khan Films or Yash Raj, stating, “I have been very disappointed with directors, writers… I will do something and I will do it on my own.”
Kangana on encouraging aspiring directors
Kangana also encouraged more individuals in the industry to pursue directing. The actress suggested that many actors could broaden their skills beyond acting. She cited examples of actors like Shreyas Talpade and Anupam Kher, who have successfully transitioned into directing roles. She remarked, “But there’s not a single director I want to work with. So that’s how I ended up here.”
Kangana on female representation in South films
In her critique, Kangana extended her concerns beyond Bollywood. She expressed disappointment in the portrayal of female protagonists in South Indian films as well. She questioned whether she would want to be in their position, firmly stating, “No, sorry. Absolutely not.”

Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency is set to be released on January 17, 2025. She serves as both director and co-producer, with a screenplay by Ritesh Shah and a story crafted by Ranaut herself.
